{"id":300,"date":"2016-10-12T14:00:21","date_gmt":"2016-10-12T18:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portfolios.cs.earlham.edu\/?p=300"},"modified":"2016-10-12T14:56:02","modified_gmt":"2016-10-12T18:56:02","slug":"next-steps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/portfolios.cs.earlham.edu\/index.php\/2016\/10\/12\/next-steps\/","title":{"rendered":"Next Steps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been trying to figure out which libraries and frameworks are best for developing my Kinect application on Linux, and without testing any of the libraries I&#8217;ve found for compatibility so far, the search has been really difficult. <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1145\/2617995.2618016\">This paper<\/a> provides one possible setup, using:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/openframeworks.cc\/\">openFrameworks<\/a> for essential libraries such as OpenGL, a choice number of audio libraries, and a font library<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/gameoverhack\/ofxOpenNI\">ofxOpenNI module<\/a>, a wrapper for:\n<ul>\n<li>OpenNI, providing access to the Kinect device and extracting the video stream (unfortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openni.org\/\">the original website<\/a> was shut down, but there is <a href=\"http:\/\/structure.io\/openni\">this site<\/a> instead)<\/li>\n<li>NITE, providing the skeleton tracking capabilities (also shut down with OpenNI)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/avin2\/SensorKinect\">SensorKinect<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ll look for other papers that have developed Kinect applications and check which of these libraries are absolutely necessary, if at all.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: <a href=\"https:\/\/openkinect.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">libfreenect<\/a> (to replace OpenNI) and <a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?doid=2393347.2396521\">XKin<\/a> (to replace NITE) seem to be attractive open-source alternatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been trying to figure out which libraries and frameworks are best for developing my Kinect application on Linux, and without testing any of the libraries I&#8217;ve found for compatibility so far, the search has been really difficult.
